Ranthambore Park History
Presence of majestic Ranthambore fort had ensured human presence in this region. Till 20th century, it was a fine wildlife reserve offering shelter to wildlife. It was used as a private hunting preserve for royal families of Jaipur and Karauli. In year 1939, Jaipur forest act was introduced with motive of wildlife conservation. Later in year 1953, Rajasthan Forest Act was introduced with motive of wildlife conservation and ensuring better legal security. After Indian independence, it was first declared as Sawai Madhopur Wildlife Sanctuary in year 1955, by Government of India. Before this period, Jaipur state charges "royalty tax" from local villagers to take forest produce for their personal use but once it was declared as Wildlife Sanctuary, this practice stopped permanently. Later in year 1973, Project Tiger was introduced in all over India and initially 09 forest areas were selected. Ranthambore was one among those first 09 wildlife sanctuaries. Ranthambore national park was created in year 1980, from Ranthambore tiger reserve area. In year 1983, 02 wildlife sanctuaries were created, adjacent to national park i.e. Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi sanctuary. Later, both of them were included in Ranthambore tiger reserve as a move to increase the tiger reserve area.
